        • Eastern Market Food Tour

          Ticket info

The first of our market tours series takes us to Eastern Market - the longest running public market in Washington DC. Still serving its original function as a public market, Eastern Market has been the center of life within Capitol Hill for over 200 years.

Part of a city-wide public market system, Eastern Market was built in order to provide a convenient supply of goods to Capitol Hill residents. It acted as an anchor to the Capitol Hill neighborhood; its presence helped to both retain and attract neighborhood residents.

Additionally, Eastern market was a symbol of urbanization, as Washington DC worked to remove the sleepy southern town image it had since the founding of the Federal city.

Our Eastern Market Food Tour will give you an inside look at the legendary market. You will have the opportunity to meet the long standing vendors and taste their specialties which include a variety of local products produced and grown within the Washington DC area.

Your Food Tour may include the following specialties:

          - French Pate
          - Homemade Kimchi
          - Locally grown fruits
          - Artisan Breads
          - Spanish Ibernico ham
          - Regional Cheeses
          - Homemade turkey jerky
          - Empenadas
          - DC Half Smokes
          - Eastern European Desserts

After the tour, you will understand the importance of Eastern Market within Capitol Hill as well as Washington DC.

America’s story lives here! Before there was Washington, there was Georgetown, then and now, a center for society and politics. In 1805, on 8½ acres purchased with a bequest from George Washington, Martha Washington’s granddaughter and her husband envisioned the estate that would become Tudor Place Historic House & Garden, home to six generations of their descendants and now an extraordinary museum. On hourly guided tours, see the Thornton-designed Neoclassical house and collection – including decorative arts, domestic objects, and rare items from Washington’s Mount Vernon; on self-guided garden tours, enjoy gravel paths and expansive lawns, the woodsy Dell, and numerous garden “rooms” that reflect the land’s evolution from urban farmstead to the recreational oasis it is today.

              American Visionary Art Museum

Behold the sights and wonders at the official national museum for self-taught and intuitive artistry! Located on a 1.1 acre wonderland campus on Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the American Visionary Art Museum is a treasure trove of creativity of all sorts. Three renovated historic industrial buildings house works of art by everyday people — farmers, housewives, the disabled, the homeless...and the occasional neurosurgeon — who create extraordinary things. "One of the best museums ANYWHERE in America," raves CNN. On top of Travel + Leisure magazine's list of "Ten Places to See Before You're Ten." And a perennial favorite among museum aficionados AND novices alike.
